Britain Burns: Riots Spread Through U.K. Cities

On Thursday, the British police shot dead a man in the street. Tensions escalated during Friday and on Saturday night, some 300 youths congregated outside the local police station in the London area of Tottenham in a peaceful demonstration which got out of hand as members of the public from other areas of London and beyond ran amok in the streets, torching buildings and vehicles as they went on a looting spree.

Granted, but where there isn't compatible software, usually there is a F/OSS alternative. I've not found very many programs that I can't make work or replace.

Or Mac. It's becoming rarer and rarer that software won't work across platform somehow, except if we're talking about the latest versions of software which of course need some time to be "made compatible" or tested.

Which, as I was talking about novices, you can't expect this from.

I disagree. Although it's more difficult to do now, a few years ago I installed a copy of Windows XP and was infected within about 45 seconds of being online - before I could even open a browser to download a firewall or AV. I then spent the next several hours downloading stuff in between popups and other crap, saving it all to a disk, and reinstalling again (and installing AV/FW before plugging in the ethernet cable). As mentioned - it's rarer with modern copies of Windows but certainly not out of the question, and I'm quite sure I'm not the only person to have experienced such a thing.

The thing is that these days even the most innocent looking sites can be infected with drive-by download stuff - my AV alerted me to something the other day when I went to a website featuring an article on (IIRC) Garry Kasparov, but again this comes down to the fact that we're talking about novices: will they have good AV or will they just stick with the default (Norton or McAfee or whatever)? Probably the latter.

Of course, Malware is just one of many issues that can arise when we're talking about novices.

To someone who has never used a computer before, any version of Windows is frankly a bit daunting. I like what Ubuntu has been doing with it's UI. I like what Sugar has done to the UI. These for novices are great - since they're not fundamentally different from certain types of phones (iPhone, Symbian 3, Android) which although usually quite powerful can be picked up and used for their basic purposes because what they need is simply presented right there in front of them.

This is not the case in Gnome, KDE or even on Mac OS (because the icons on the dock and the program names are virtually meaningless to a novice), and as such, in this respect F/OSS is winning not just because of the UIs mentioned but because they're free (and legal and malware free) which is one-less cost to take in to account for manufacturers making budget devices (which seem to be being announced weekly at the moment). And for the users *buying* these budget devices - or even something like an iPad - a simple, easy to use ISP service which is affordable *and* fast will be a boon.

I couldn't walk up to my mother in law and offer her a 10mbit/s service with a 10GB cap because she won't have the faintest clue what the hell I'm on about, nor is she likely to care. She needs to know that it's fast (her email will load quickly), it'll allow her to communicate with the world in the way that she needs to (Skype video will work for talking to her sister abroad) and that even if she does want to download a couple of movies and a bit of music here and there, she can - but not too much... and of course the price - and that in the unlikely event that she approaches whatever limit is set for her, we'll let her know in such a way that she can either not download as much or she can upgrade her plan. These types of people can't be expected to understand megabits, megabytes or "FUP" even if the service has these parameters (and even though the "technical parameters" would be readily available in case she wanted to check with someone who has technical knowledge).

Agree completely. Normally premium software developers launch software in this trend - Windows --> Mac --> Linux (only if there is demand). F/OSS are great but then in a free thing you can only expect upto a level to be frank. The reason a paid software would always develop more features and progress faster is because there is massive profit from the sales and so that can be spent on hiring the best developers and making it better. Also the support would be more dedicated in case of paid software. In case of F/OSS it gets limited as even the best of people get pissed off after sometime when giving their time and energy for nothing and if their compatriots and in many cases less talented people are making massive income by working in some paid software. For example, if you were to give out free lines to everyone in India or without any profit margin even in the long term then probably you would never have been that much zealous or dedicated to the same as you are now. I have a few charitable websites but to be frank I never get motivated enough to give much time as it is simply economics which rules our lives directly or indirectly. A person can work for free or without much profit only for a certain time but after that every human needs to earn profit. Even in F/OSS premium services are propping up everywhere for extended functions and so there also economics is working directly or indirectly.

I completely agree with the recent Windows and novices part too. I have found Windows Vista and Windows 7 especially to be extremely resistive to virus threats. Even Microsoft's free AV i.e. MSE is awesome and I have only been using it only on my computers with my router firewall activated though I have a premium malware checker which I check once in a couple of months. But till now there has been no problem at all. I have left Windows XP for most computers but I still have a netbook which I hardly ever use with Windows XP genuine preinstalled and that has not attracted viruses too till date. But it is quite different in case of novices I agree. To be frank, even somebody else USB pen drives might screw up a computer if not virus scanned and deleted previously. I have been finding the most viruses in the case of USB pen drives of other people especially brought from an internet cafe etc. So, I agree with the differences and level of precaution for a regular user and a novice non-tech guy.

F/OSS and Linux rocks and I personally stand by it and feel that every Indian should switch to it instead of the pirated Windows and software they use if they are not professional user or cannot spend on it. For most users who do not need much specializations F/OSS is more than enough. Even for professional user F/OSS is more than enough in most cases unless they are using specialized software. Frankly speaking if I open a small website related company in the near future I would probably also install some Linux distro on the stations to save costs and also to be free from malware or virus threats.

1] what if we cant see atoms directly? we can see them in many other ways. we can smash them into each other. we can do a lot of other shit with them too.
2] science is not the basis of our life. science merely explains the universe.
3] scientific proof doesnt rely on personal opinion, it relies on major consensus and valid proofs/evidence.
