Required help Desperatley!!!!!!!

Posted: 17 Jul 2011 04:11 AM PDT

Hey guys, I don't know whether this is an appropriate question to be posted on this website but I could think of no other site for this query. I hope you all will help me to clear this cobweb off my brain. Here it goes:-
I am doing Bachelor of Science from Lucknow University with mathematics and computer science as the subjects and I am in third year of my degree. I want to make my career in R&D sector. It doesn't matter for me whether it is in Mathematics or Computer Science. Now my query is as follows:-
Can I enter R&D industry even if I do an MCA? Will I be able to do research i.e. Ph.D. after this degree? As far as I read about various internships for computer science they either for B.Tech or M.Tech students only, am I eligible for these interships?
I know you'll be thinking that maths and comp. sci are quite different in terms of research fields but i like thinking about interdisciplinary stuff like using computer science to solve mathematics problems and using mathematics ( graph theory ) to understand computer science. I like reading about neural networks because they use lots of statistics and mathematics.
I would be highly grateful to you all if you could give me some guidance on this query

Note:- I am talking about industry in specific and not teaching jobs

saudi Women have been banned from construction work to 'protect' them!

Posted: 17 Jul 2011 03:32 AM PDT

Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Labour has banned women from construction jobs and many areas of metal manufacture in a newly published statement that aims to clarify its gender expectations.

Adel Fakeih, labour minister, has produced a shortlist of 20 jobs deemed unsuitable for women despite wider efforts to encourage them to enter the workplace.

Women are prohibited from "construction work" generally, including repair work, painting, and anything that involves climbing ladders. They are also banned from roles involving digging, laying concrete, repairing or cleaning machines.

Other areas of work from which women are banned include rubber manufacture for tyres, mining, welding, coal production, glass melting and "working in the copper industry or with lead complexes containing more than 10% lead".

"These decisions are not meant to change our customs or traditions," the minister said yesterday. "The Saudi woman has every right to work. We are only implementing regulations that will protect her and ensure her rights."

New restrictions did not apply to foreign women, he added, and it also did not prevent Saudi women from owning companies in the sectors in which they cannot work as employees.

The minister explained that the government is devising new regulation for women in the workplace alongside new regulations concerning the Saudisation of women jobs to come from the Ministry of the Interior.

The minister encouraged other government departments to give feedback and questions as to the new restrictions

'Saudisation' is the catch-all term for the government's nationwide scheme to encourage and install citizens in jobs throughout the private sector. Earlier this year it launched 'Nitiqat', a system of assessment that categorised companies operating in the country as 'red flag', 'yellow flag' or 'green flag' depending on the proportion of employees who are Saudi nationals.

Red flag companies – those with the smallest proportion of citizens - have been given until 26 November to address the balance of their Saudi count before the government imposes fines. 'Yellow flag' companies will be given until February 2012.

The nationalisation of the workforce has alarmed some international partners, such as India, which has millions of workers in Saudi Arabia, mainly in the construction industry. Last month, the ministry moved to assure Members of Consulate General of India, Non-Resident Keralites Affairs that there would be no immediate mass expulsion of workers as the Nitiqat regime takes effect.

'My Friend Has Been Hacked' - Hotmail's New Feature

Posted: 17 Jul 2011 03:16 AM PDT

If you are using Hotmail, you can find the ''My Friend Has Been Hacked' feature in the “Mark as” menu.

It can be used by users to report compromised accounts directly to Hotmail.

Once you lodge a report using that feature, Hotmail takes that report and combines it with the other information from the compromise detection engine to determine if the account in question has in fact been hijacked.

It turns out that the report that comes from you can be one of the strongest “signals” to the detection engine, since you may be the first to notice the compromise.

Any hotmail users here?

What is Cyber War? Is it disastrous? Can it be prevented?

Posted: 17 Jul 2011 03:07 AM PDT

Cyber war is described as a 'politically motivated' hacking to conduct sabotage and espionage.

It is a form of information warfare. It has been defined by government security expert Richard A. Clarke, in his book Cyber War, as "actions by a nation-state to penetrate another nation's computers or networks for the purposes of causing damage or disruption."

There are references in near past of cyber wars in China, Russia & United States.

There was a discussion on CE 3 years back regarding this: http://www.crazyengineers.com/forum/...eing-done.html

Since then, a lot of things have changed. This thread is for all engineers to discuss about the ongoing issue of cyber wars. Are they disastrous? Can they be prevented?

Google Tests Interface Optimized for Infinite Scrolling

Posted: 17 Jul 2011 02:58 AM PDT

Alon Laudon spotted a new interface being experimented for Google's results pages.

The most important change is that most navigation elements continue to be visible even when you scroll down.

The navigation bar, the search box and the search options sidebar have a fixed position, which means that you no longer have scroll to the top of the page to edit the query or switch to a specialized search engine.

Page preview is a little different - the button appears to the side of the result text preview instead of to the side of the result webpage name. The site also doesn't pop up the preview when you simply click something inside the text, you have to hover over the magnifying glass icon.
